Presentation of the Étang de Thau

Étang de Thau is 19 km long and 5 km wide. It also has an impressive surface area of 7,500 hectares. It has an average depth of 4.50 m and holds almost 340 million m³ of water. However, it is possible for it to reach more than 10 m in some places. The water temperature is generally between 0° and 24°C. Between February and June, water salinity is fairly low. However, it is more noticeable between July and January. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea, the lake is home to remarkable biodiversity.

Discoveries not to be missed

The Étang de Thau is also a wonderful place to discover the marine world. Because the waters of the lake are particularly rich in phytoplankton, oyster and mussel farming thrive here.

Oyster farming has been developed here for over a century. Not surprisingly, the Étang de Thau is the Mediterranean capital of this sector. Be sure to stop off at the village of Bouzigues and visit the museum that pays tribute to the oyster and mussel farming that is the main activity in the surrounding area. You can sample the delicious oysters produced locally on a boat or at a producer's, who will offer you succulent samples at the water's edge. Don't forget to enjoy some white wine to enhance the authenticity of this exceptional mollusc. We can also recommend local specialities such as tielle sétoise or brasucade de moules.

Water sports activities

When you visit the Étang de Thau, there are plenty of water sports on offer. If you're travelling with friends, don't hesitate to go canoeing. It's a great way to admire the lake's exceptional wildlife.

During the summer months, make the most of the sunshine along the coast to go kitesurfing, especially at Marseillan-Plage. It's a great spot for kitesurfing because of the safety it offers. You can also go stand-up puddling or take a sailboat under the supervision of a nautical guide.

Discovering the Étang de Thau is an opportunity to appreciate the richness of its seabed. Scuba diving will reveal a unique lagoon kingdom to you. Amateurs can enjoy a first dive, while experts can hire the necessary equipment and explore the seabed on their own. You can also enjoy an aerial view of this unique place on a microlight flight. On this expedition, accompanied by a qualified instructor, the lake will be revealed to you in a whole new light.
