Visit a shellfish farm from your campsite by the sea in Hérault

The history of Marseillan's shellfish-farming families dates back to the early 1920s, when an oyster farm was set up based on a rational system of oyster and mussel farming. However, it is well known that oysters have existed in the Thau lagoon since Antiquity. Today, the lagoon, just a 10-minute drive from La Créole campsite in the Hérault department, contains around 2,750 standardised breeding tables.

From past to present

If you enjoy the delicate salty taste of shellfish and oysters, then you've chosen the perfect destination for your holiday. Head to the shores of the Thau lagoon for oysters, clams, mussels and fish. All served with a glass of sun-drenched local wine, of course. But before we open the doors to the region's shellfish farms, let's take a look at a bit of history.

Thanks to its connection with the Mediterranean Sea, the Thau basin and Marseillan were already the habitat of a fine natural fauna, including several species of fish. These include sea bream, perch and mullet. This basin is also known as a natural sanctuary for mussels, which in fact developed thanks to centuries of attempts at farming.

Thanks to all these efforts, there are now numerous oyster and mussel beds, as well as oyster and clam hatcheries. You can also go behind the scenes of the famous shellfish farms almost anywhere in the basin.

 On your plate

Wander along the Marseillan dock and absorb the magic of the place and the gentle lapping of the waves. A wide range of restaurants will satisfy even the most demanding gourmets. You'll find many specialised in Mediterranean seafood, some of them very well known, with great chefs.

These restaurants are considered to be a key hub for mussel farming. They offer exclusively local products from the shellfish farms where the freshly extracted products are packaged for the gastronomic professionals.

All products, including oysters, mussels, clams, prawns and lobster, come exclusively from local Mediterranean producers. You are also free to create your own platter, take it away or enjoy it on the spot. Here, you'll enjoy a truly privileged moment sitting at a table overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, between fishing nets and boats, fishermen and producers.

Discover authentic tastes and flavours. Vineyards have always been one of the most important sectors in the local economy. To accompany your seafood platter, choose between Merlot, Syrah, Grenache and even Clairette to delight your senses.
